What kind of adventure lover are you?

I love adventure stories. I grew up on Enid’s Blyton’s Famous Five and the Magic Faraway Tree as well as the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

There are numerous sub-genres of adventure stories, ranging from those on the high seas, jungles, outer space and worlds of fantasy.

These are some of my other favourite adventure stories:

  • The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien – What a classic! I love the inclusion of the different races – the dwarves, elves, orcs etc. He also tells a wonderful story of his love and concern for the environment through the Ents (tree giants).

  • 20,000 Leagues under the Sea by Jules Verne – A highly imaginative journey where Captain Nemo and his submarine the Nautilus enter the new frontier, the sea - even visiting mysterious Atlantis.

  • The Life of Pi by Yann Martel – Such a creative and imaginative story where Pi describes how he survived for 227 days on a small lifeboat with a tiger, a zebra, an orangutan, and a hyena.

  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding – A plane crashes on an uncharted island, stranding a group of British schoolboys. With no adult supervision, order collapses and terror takes over. An eye-opening story.

  • Treasure Island by Robert Louise Stevenson – Who doesn’t love a classic pirate adventure?
