Tips for Writers - Should authors request an ARC reader to sign a confidentiality agreement?
My legal answer is that it if an author wants to protect themselves as much as possible, yes getting an ARC reader to sign a confidentiality agreement can be useful in preventing them from discussing your book with other people or writing something similar to the author’s work.
However, my practical answer is, it’s not necessary to get an ARC reader to sign a confidentiality agreement, given the copyright protection already in place. Even though the author is giving them a free copy of their book, the ARC reader is giving up their time to read the book (usually for free) so they can provide a review and hopefully create some buzz about the release of the new book. My recommendation is don’t aggravate them by asking them to sign a confidentiality agreement.
